Tasting Notes
This wine has power and presence but also displays balanced structure, subtlety, and refinement. Aromas of ripe blackberry, plum, and cassis mingle with notes of cinnamon, allspice, violets, and toasted tobacco. Mouthwatering black and red cherries on the palate meet fine tannins, clean minerality, and acidity that sings with perfect pitch. This truly remarkable wine shows what unique Napa site expression and single origin fruit can become in the hands of a talented winemaker. It’s delicious now although should age beautifully for 15+ years.
Terroir
Located very south Napa Valley between Carneros and Coombsville, the vineyard sits on a volcanic rocky bench, in a cooler climate widely influenced by the bay. In this very cool area grapes take longer to ripen and require considerable hang time. Standing in this beautiful vineyard, one can see the most northern part of the San Francisco Bay. Sugarloaf has a great tannin composition supporting large shoulders and volume. The wine is perfectly ripe yet expressing fresh aromas and soft acidity.
